A California privacy complaint: what to prepare

If a privacy request goes unanswered or a business practice concerns you, a clear record helps you explain what happened.

A complaint and a consultation serve different purposes

CalPrivacy accepts complaints about suspected violations of California consumer privacy rights. The agency can use complaints to identify patterns and consider enforcement. It does not represent individual consumers or act as your attorney. A complaint does not mean the agency will take action or that a private lawsuit is available.

Prepare a concise account

  • Identify the business and the website or app involved.
  • Record the relevant dates and the privacy choice or request you made.
  • Describe what you observed and the response you received.
  • Identify records you have, such as notices, confirmations, or screenshots.
  • Explain your California connection without guessing which law applies.

Use the official instructions

Read CalPrivacy’s complaint guide and use the complaint path linked there. Review what information the agency requests and how it may use it. Keep your submission confirmation. Do not include unrelated sensitive information or upload another person’s records without authority.

When you want an individual discussion

If you want the firm to consider your concern, start with a short explanation of the event, dates, and region. Ask about deadlines separately. Filing a regulator complaint does not create an attorney relationship or confirm that the firm is protecting a deadline.
